Message sounds like you dont really need an SLR .. they dont list "optical zoom" b/c everything is optical on an SLR .. no digital zoom.
The other problem you run into with SLR is sometimes security at NBA,NHL, and NFL games will not let you in b/c they deem anything with a removable lens as "professional" and thus not allowed ... dont ask why I just know I've been turned away from many places when all I wanted was to take snapshots from the nosebleed sections. Less problems at MLB stadiums, they dont care as long as you dont bring a tripod or monopod.

I'd see what Nikon or Canon had to offer in your price range, compare it against what the Sony offers, compare sample pics ... and read testomonials from people. I have little experience with point and shoots anymore, so even I'll admit I'm not the best source of info on those. YOu need SLR advice and I have too much.
